Documenting personal stories is as much about the photographer as it is about the subjects. In this session, Nancy will share her intimate family story, breaking down her journey and detailing her experience photographing her parents’ parallel cancer treatments, wearing both hats of photographer and daughter. She will reflect on her path, personally and professionally, sharing the creative process of documentation, developing a visual, empathetic narrative, and diving deep into the experience of taking her personal story into the public, published sphere. She will touch on the many lessons she learned along the way, including the mistakes and things she wish she knew and will share advice and tips for those interested in exploring the realm of personal work. Attendees are encouraged to bring along ideas and projects that they are working on as the last portion of the class will act as a collaborative brainstorming session.
